Vancouver Gaffer Day Rate (2026): What Working Gaffers Make in BC
What working gaffers actually make in Vancouver, BC in 2026. Non-union and IATSE Local 891 rates in CAD, BC tax credit context, and how the market sits below LA.
Vancouver is one of the busiest production markets in North America, anchored by the British Columbia tax credit stack and decades of cross-border television and feature work that earned the city its "Hollywood North" reputation. The gaffer market in Vancouver is deep, experienced, and union-heavy. Working gaffers in Vancouver in 2026 are pulling C$700-1,200/day on non-union work, C$1,100-1,600/day on IATSE Local 891 signatory work. Rates below are in Canadian dollars.
This guide is the practical breakdown of gaffer rates in Vancouver in 2026, the structural drivers, how Local 891 fits, and what coordinators traveling from LA or NY need to know.
The quick answer
| Tier | Non-union day rate (CAD) | Local 891 signatory (CAD) |
|---|---|---|
| Entry / new gaffer | C$550-750 | Scale + bumps |
| Mid (3-7 years) | C$700-950 | Scale + bumps |
| Senior / experienced | C$950-1,200+ | C$1,200-1,600+ |
All figures in Canadian dollars. Rates above are 10 to 12-hour day rates in 2026. Kit fees, box rental, vehicle, and overtime are separate. Cross-border USD equivalents will shift with exchange but generally run roughly parallel to Atlanta USD rates for the upper-mid tier.
Why Vancouver gaffer rates land where they do
The BC tax credit stack. British Columbia offers a Production Services Tax Credit on labor for non-resident-shot productions, plus regional incentives, plus credits stacking with federal programs. The credit is one of the most reliable in North America for predictable budget math, which is what attracts the steady streaming and feature work.
IATSE Local 891. BC's powerhouse below-the-line local. Local 891 covers virtually all gaffers on union signatory work in the province. The Local's rate sheet is the canonical reference for most series and feature pricing in Vancouver.
Cross-border demand from LA studios. Major US series and tentpole features routinely shoot in Vancouver. That keeps the senior gaffer tier booked deep into the season and supports senior pricing.
Vancouver Film Studios and Bridge Studios. The two anchor facility brands sustain baseline capacity and predictable production volume.
By project type
National Canadian commercial. C$800-1,100/day non-union for a mid-senior gaffer.
National US commercial shooting in BC. C$1,000-1,300/day non-union. US agency budgets accommodate higher non-union rates and senior gaffers price accordingly.
Streaming series. Most series shoot signatory. Local 891 gaffer scale applies. Typical landing range: C$1,150-1,500/day plus box rental and 891 overtime structure.
Indie feature. C$600-850/day non-union. BC has a real indie feature market supported by federal Canadian content programs.
VFX-heavy series. Vancouver's VFX gravity means many series have substantial second-unit and green-screen days that gaffers work on. Rates are consistent with first-unit rates.
Doc and unscripted. C$600-800/day. Smaller lighting packages, less complex demands.
Kit fees, box rental, and adders
Vancouver gaffer kit fees in CAD:
- Standard kit: C$100-175/day.
- Full kit with practicals: C$200-300/day.
Box rental, vehicle rental, and loss-and-damage waivers follow patterns similar to US markets, billed in CAD.
A Vancouver-specific consideration: many BC gaffers travel from Surrey, Langley, North Vancouver, or further outlying areas. Productions sometimes negotiate travel allowance or transport on top of day rate for senior gaffers whose home base is outside the immediate Vancouver core.
Overtime and Local 891 specifics
Non-union overtime structure: 1.5x after hour 10, 2x after hour 14, 1.5x on the 6th day, 2x on the 7th.
Local 891 has its own structure with overtime triggers, meal-penalty rules, and turnaround requirements that differ from US IATSE locals. The Local 891 contract is the canonical reference for any production going signatory in BC.
US coordinators traveling to BC often miss meal-penalty triggers under 891 rules. Plan meal-break logistics carefully. A missed meal on a 14-hour series day can add meaningful cost across an electric department.
Currency math for US coordinators
Vancouver rates in CAD translate to USD at the prevailing exchange. At a roughly C$1.35 to USD rate, a C$1,000/day Vancouver gaffer day rate is approximately $740 USD. The cross-border math is generally favorable for US-funded productions, which is one of the structural reasons Vancouver remains attractive to LA-financed work.
This currency advantage is real and underbudgeted. A US production budgeting $900/day for a senior gaffer based on LA pricing will find that rate translates to a top-tier senior gaffer in Vancouver. The savings show up at scale across a full series block.
How rates have moved 2024 to 2026
Vancouver gaffer rates in CAD moved up 7-12% across 2024-2026. Drivers:
- Sustained streaming volume
- Cost-of-living adjustments in metro Vancouver
- Senior crew scarcity
- Local 891 contract adjustments
In USD terms, the move is more variable due to exchange. Plan 6-9% above 2025 line items for 2026 budgets in CAD.

The bottom line for coordinators
A working gaffer in Vancouver in 2026 typically lands at C$700-950/day non-union for commercial and indie work, with C$1,150-1,500/day on Local 891 signatory series work. Add C$100-200/day kit fee. In USD terms, the cross-border math is generally favorable for US-funded productions.
Vancouver is a mature, deep, experienced gaffer market. The talent is real, the rental ecosystem is strong, and the union floor is well-defined. Budget Local 891 meal-penalty and overtime structures carefully if shooting signatory.
