What a Key Grip Actually Does on Set
The Key Grip is the head of the grip department and one of the most critical hires on any film or television production. Working hand-in-hand with the Director of Photography, the Key Grip is responsible for rigging, camera support, and controlling light - not by operating fixtures, but by shaping, blocking, and diffusing it through flags, nets, silks, and overhead frames. They build camera rigs, manage cranes and dollies, coordinate with the Gaffer on lighting setups, and lead a team of grips safely through long shoot days.
On an Atlanta shoot - whether it's a studio feature at Trilith, a streaming series, a commercial, or an indie film - a strong Key Grip keeps the camera department moving efficiently and ensures every setup is physically safe and precisely executed.
What to Look for When Hiring a Key Grip in Atlanta
- Relevant credits: Look for grips who have worked on projects similar in scale and format to yours - features, episodic TV, commercials, and documentaries each have different rhythms and demands.
- Knowledge of local resources: An Atlanta-based Key Grip will have established relationships with local grip truck vendors, rental houses, and expendables suppliers, which saves you time and money.
- Leadership and communication: The Key Grip manages a crew. References from DPs, ADs, and UPMs who can speak to their professionalism and calm under pressure matter as much as technical skill.
- Safety record: Rigging and overhead work carry real physical risk. Ask about their approach to safety protocols, especially for stunts, aerial rigs, or large-scale setups.
- Union or non-union flexibility: Atlanta supports both IATSE union productions and non-union independent work. Make sure the Key Grip you hire fits your production's labor agreement.
Atlanta Key Grip Rates: What to Expect
Day rates for a Key Grip in Atlanta typically vary based on the type of production, whether it is union or non-union, and the scope of the job. Feature films and major streaming productions working under IATSE agreements follow established scale rates. Independent films and commercials may negotiate directly. In general, Key Grips command higher day rates than swing grips or best boys, reflecting their supervisory role and the depth of experience required. Budget for kit rentals separately if the Key Grip supplies their own expendables or specialized gear.
Producers post projects for free, browse profiles of crew, and connect directly - no agency fees, no middlemen.
