2nd AC / Clapper Loader
As footage flies to the cloud the moment it's shot, the person who keeps the camera department organized, logged and on time becomes the backbone of the set.
The job, and where it's going.
The 2nd AC keeps the camera department running. You slate every take, lay actor marks, keep the camera reports, manage media cards or film mags, build and move the camera with the 1st AC, and track every lens, battery and filter on the cart. On film shoots you also load and unload the magazines, which is where the clapper loader name comes from.
What stays human
- Reading the set and having the next lens, filter or battery ready before the 1st AC asks
- Slating cleanly and safely, close to an actor's face, without breaking their focus
- Laying marks and keeping track of them through blocking changes
- Handling the camera media chain of custody so nothing is ever erased before it's backed up
- Keeping a calm, tidy cart and a friendly line between camera, sound, script and the DIT
What's changing
The next ten years
Most professional sets use digital reports, timecode generators and verified card offloads, while film loading is still alive on features and commercials.
Over the next few years, expect more sets where camera metadata, reports and proxies go straight to the cloud with no paper at all.
Likely shape: less paperwork typing, more responsibility for data integrity, metadata and a fast, safe camera department, with the 2nd AC as its organizer.
