Photographer
In a world full of generated images, a photographer who was actually there, and can prove it, is worth more to every brand, studio and publication.
The job, and where it's going.
Photographers make still images for productions, brands, publications and people. On a film or TV set, the unit still photographer captures the scenes and behind-the-scenes moments that become posters, press and publicity, without getting in the way of the shot. Off set, you might shoot portraits, events, products, editorial or campaigns, often running your own lighting, retouching and client delivery.
What stays human
- Being in the right place at the right second, quietly, while a scene or event unfolds
- Making a nervous person relax in front of a lens
- Reading a set well enough to shoot during takes without being seen or heard
- Building trust with talent, publicists and clients so they let you close
- Choosing the one frame out of hundreds that tells the story
What's changing
The next ten years
Tethered shooting, cloud delivery and Content Credentials are already in use at agencies, newsrooms and on many sets.
Over the next few years, expect more clients to ask for signed originals, same-day selects and stills plus short motion from one booking.
Likely shape: the generic stock image gets replaced by generated pictures, while photographers who capture real people, real events and real sets, with a provable chain from camera to client, are in higher demand.
