How to Break Into Film With No Connections: Training Programs That Get You on Set
How to break into film with no connections: DGA trainee programs, Made in NY PA Training, labs, fellowships and union safety courses, by department.
You don't need a contact to break into the film industry. A handful of training programs are a door that doesn't need one: you apply on your own, and some ask for no experience at all. The New York DGA Assistant Director Training Program has trainees work at least 350 production days over two years (deadline December 1, 2026 for the 2027 class), and Made in NY PA Training offers training and placement into entry-level film and TV jobs for unemployed and low-income New York City residents.
Past those, the right program depends on your department. Below, every program is grouped that way. Dates move every year, so check the program page before you plan around one.
Why a program beats a contact
A contact vouches for you. A program does that with structure: you learn in person, next to people who've done the work for years. That matters more as generated video takes the low end and real production, taste and trust become the premium.

DGA Assistant Director Training Program (New York)
According to the program's FAQ, you must be at least 21 to be accepted, and experience isn't required, though you need "a strong and committed interest in film production." The program runs a full two years, and trainees work a minimum of 350 production days in that time. Trainees are paid wages set by the DGA agreements, and graduates can join the DGA as 2nd ADs. The deadline for the 2027 class is December 1, 2026.
Assistant Directors Training Program (Los Angeles)
The LA program is run by the Directors Guild-Producer Training Plan and leads toward the Southern California 2nd AD qualification list. Its FAQ says there's no written test or fee to apply or participate. It also says the timeline changes each year and that no applications are taken past the deadline, with no exceptions. So check the page now and put the window on your calendar. The DGA qualification lists themselves are run by DGA Contract Administration, and signatory companies must give hiring preference from them.
Made in NY PA Training
This one's simple. The Mayor's Office of Media and Entertainment page says the program was developed with Brooklyn Workforce Innovations and provides unemployed and low-income New York City residents with training and placement into entry-level film and TV production jobs. The page doesn't list dates, so check the program page for dates and how to apply. For more on starting out in the city, see how to become a film PA in NYC and how to become a production assistant.

ETCP certifications are earned with work experience points and an exam. The electrician and portable power exams are 165 questions, taken at a PSI center or by live remote testing; the rigger exams run three hours and are worth it if you rig overhead on stages. ETC's free courses cover console programming, DMX, networking and troubleshooting. Unreal Engine's film resources are free, and the engine drives most LED volume content, so a gaffer who understands it has a real edge on a volume stage.
For grips, Local 80 offers dolly, camera crane and car mounting classes. The CSATF Safety Pass includes aerial lift and scissor lift classes, and electrical technicians get a special rigging course. In New York, Local 52 lists an OSHA 10 Construction card among the documents for its vested application.

Placement also requires the CSATF courses A (General Production Safety), HP1 and WVP. Check the current rules on the official page before you apply, and keep your paystubs.

How to pick one
Pick one deadline-driven program and one skill to start this month. If you're 21 or older, plan around the New York DGA program's December 1, 2026 deadline. West Coast union hopefuls need the CSATF courses anyway, so do those early. Once you're on sets, our film industry networking guide helps you build the contacts you didn't start with.
